Mississippi Artist: A Self-Portrait

Any person in an artistic field should read thisI had this book for almost a year before I read it, but once I did I couldn't imagine why I hadn't read it sooner. The man, Karl Wolfe, I didn't know, but through the book his truely poetic nature comes alive. And while, most of the book isn't about his painting you get a genuine veiw of an artist, by an artist.

Mississippi Challenge
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Average review score:

Mississippi ChallengeThis book was written for teenagers, I think and has won at least one important award (Coretta Scott King, I think). But it's a very good introduction to an intricate political situation, actually a long history of oppression. Well researched and dispassionately written, these facts that show part of the injustices at every level during the Civil Rights Movement. It is everyone's history, but it's part of a large body of nearly erased history. Called a challenge because there is not a clear win, is demonstrates many of the shameful aspects of our democratic system. Particularly pertinent at a time of cries for campaign reform. Kudos to the author, Mildred Pitts Walter!

Mississippi Delta Women in Prism

A Must Have for Collectors of Southern WritersI have a collection of books written by Southern writers. Although this is a poetry book, it provides rich pictures of people from the past. From the poetry, one is able to gain a historical perspective of life in the 1950s and 1960s. Mrs. Feild has a talent for creating characters that we all know; ones we love and hate. Through the use of words, Mrs. Feild creates vivid images that often have a sharp twist. I think that all who purchase this book will enjoying reading about these interesting Southern people.

Mississippi Gulf Coast: Portrait of a People
Published in Hardcover by American Historical Press (September, 1999)
Average review score:

Excellent History of South MississippiCharles Sullivan and Murella Hebert Powell did a wonderful job in writing the history of one of America's fastest growing regions. From the days of Bienville and d'Iberville all the way up to the 1990's, Sullivan and Powell vividly describe the history of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The book becomes especially interesting when the authors explore how the region reacted to America's wars. Besides military history, the book also contains information on domestic history, such as the growth of industry in the region. The excellent writing is complemented by the beautiful pictures of the people and landscape of south Mississippi. Whether you are a resident of Mississippi or just someone who is interested in the history of this growing area, you should definately consider this book.

Mississippi River Blues: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Cracked Classics, 2)
Published in Paperback by Hyperion Press (May, 2002)
Average review score:

Twain's classicOnce again Devin and his pal-for-life-even-if-she-is-a-girl Francine "Frankie" Lang find them ill-prepared for a literature test. They decide to once again use the library's mysterious zapper gates to get them into the story---which just happens to be The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Once again the two find themselves swept up into Twain's classic. Both soon find out that Tom is pretty much like them, a troublemaker. Soon they hook up with Tom's longtime pal Huck Finn and soon the four are swept up into their own adventures, such as whitewashing fences, pretending to be pirates, attending their own funerals, and most important, they witness a murder while visiting the graveyard at midnight. Can they bring the true person to justice? This was another great Cracked Classics. They are nice for young children and might encourage them later in life to read the actrull classic!
